A Closer View
A recent development in my work has brought me quite literally much closer to earth.
After looking down at the world from many thousands of feet up, I became intrigued, whilst waiting at the airport, by views of people in concourses below.
Small figures in open spaces, retaining their anonymity, created exciting visual possibilities Non intrusive, captured moments of people queuing, walking or rushing along, singly, or in groups, became a new focus for my art.
The relationship between the figures and their space was central to the painting and in some cases the sense of place is hinted at only by simple elements from their surroundings. Where they are topographically, is less important than their momentary place in that space.
In some regard the paintings are narrative but the ambiguity suggested by the work leaves the story open in time and place. There is a dynamic, a sense of anticipation of things before and events to come but there is also the familiarity that all of us have been there ourselves. We have been participants in or observers of, similar moments.
My work re-presents some of those moments.
All paintings are oil on canvas and available unframed.
